Discovered Attacks and Double Checks
A discovered attack is a move that uncovers an attack on your opponent's piece! You can use a discovered attack to attack multiple enemy pieces at the same time!Â
Discovered Attacks
A discovered attack is when you move a piece, and the piece behind is now attacking an enemy piece. The piece in the back has to be a bishop, rook, or queen.
In this position, the knight moves out of the way, and the bishop attacks the rook.
Why is this useful? Well, the piece that doesn't move is attacking an enemy, the piece that does move can also attack an enemy. You can attack two pieces across the board at the same time!
In this position, the knight moves out of the way, and the rook attacks the bishop.
The knight also attacks the rook at the same time!
Discovered Check
A discovered check is when the piece in the back gives a check.
In this position, the knight moves out of the way, and the queen gives a check.
Double Checks
A double check is when both pieces give a check at the same time. When that happens, your opponent can't capture or block! The enemy king has to move!
In this position, after Bc5+, black can't play c6. Why?
Because the rook on e1 is also giving check!
So, the black king has to move!
If black's not careful, it could even lead to checkmate!
